CHAPTER 3 31 The Raw Materials: Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems Clinical Relevancy Examples of Cellular Transport Mechanisms Because cell membranes are semipermeable, certain substances can move into and out of the cell. Two forms of transport are diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion results as an attempt to evenly disperse molecules of a substance throughout a given volume or environment. For example, a dead skunk in the middle of the road will be smelled throughout the whole neighborhood. A physiologic example is the movement of oxygen molecules from a high concentration in the lung to the blood which has a lesser concentration.
Mitochondria Just as the human body needs to produce energy in order to survive and, hopefully, thrive, so does the cell. The energy powerhouse of the cell, called the mitochondria, is found throughout the cytoplasm. The mitochondria actually provides approximately 95% of the energy needed for cellular reproduction, repair, and movement. The concentration of mitochondria within a cell differs according to the cell’s need. Liver cells, which require large amounts of energy, may have as many as 2,000 mitochondria each, whereas sperm cells, which need only minimal energy to swim to their destination, each have only one mitochondria coiled around the tail (flagellum).
This can lead to a condition of blueness of the skin called cyanosis, which is of concern. An important clinical assessment tool is being able to determine the difference between peripheral and central cyanosis. Someone can have just peripheral cyanosis, which causes only the extremities (arms and legs) to appear blue. This is also termed acrocyanosis (acro meaning “extremities”). If cyanosis is more severe, the whole body appears blue. This is termed central cyanosis and is a much more serious and a potentially fatal condition that requires immediate attention.
