Reflective measurements read just that, light reflected from a subject. To take a reflective reading, bring the meter right into the area you're shooting and hold it off the subject, with the meter head pointed towards the subject. For example, if you're reading a face that's side lit, take a measurement off the shadow side of the face and one off where the light is falling strongest.
